CO2-Switchable Polymer Chemistry
Stimuli-responsive materials can switch back and forth between two forms, upon application or removal of a trigger. This flexibility makes it possible to reduce energy and materials consumption in industrial processes. While it is now well known that CO2 can act as an inexpensive trigger for stimuli-responsive materials, the extent of the utility of this concept is only now being realized. This presentation will illustrate how CO2-switchable polymers can be designed and applied in oil-based paints, medical bandages, and packaging materials. CO2-switchable polymerization catalysts have also been developed in order to help with post-reaction catalyst recovery.
