Green and Sustainable Science for Society

While the concepts of “green" and “sustainable" may seem almost identical, they are in fact quite different. Companies often exploit the fact that consumers don't have a clear understanding of these terms. Even among scientists and engineers in this research area, there are many controversies about what areas of research are appropriate and how new technologies should be evaluated. This presentation for a general audience will define the two terms, show how their definitions have evolved over time, and discuss how society can identify the greenest options for any specific application.
