Overview

Geology is the study of the processes, products and history of the Earth. There is a continuous demand for energy and mineral resources globally, so is the demand for geologists. The Department of Geology at the University of Jordan has been a home for pioneering research and excellent teaching for well over forty years, with our graduates becoming leaders in both academia and industry. We have strong research programs in earth materials, mineralogy, sedimentary and earth surface processes, hydrogeology, remote sensing, geophysics, geochemistry/petrology, engineering geology and structural geology with the emphasis on the geology of Jordan and its mineral and water resources. The Department of Geology strives to not only conduct advanced research but to also provide high-quality education in the geosciences at the undergraduate and graduate level. We offer programs leading to Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Environmental and Applied Geology as well as Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth Sciences. The Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory at the Department of Geology hosts the most modern computers and software. Our labs have a series of modern instruments as high-resolution tools for studying the crystal-chemistry of fine-grained material. Our techniques involve combining X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for characterizing and monitoring fine particle mineral reactions in various geological and geotechnical settings. We are very privileged to enjoy a close collaboration with scientists in industry and government research institutions. Since its inception, the department searched for highly qualified faculty members, mainly through a well-coordinated scholarship program with top universities in Germany, USA, England, and Canada leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The students enrolled in the undergraduate program are chosen among the top 25% of the secondary school graduate. Adopted textbooks for the offered courses are similar to those used by high standard American and other international universities. The overall setup of the department regarding the semester system, method of teaching, advising, and assessment of student performance follows internationally recognized universities.
