Providing clean and affordable water to meet human needs is one of the greatest global challenges of this century. Worldwide, water supply struggles to keep up with the fast growing demand, which is aggravated by population growth, global climate change, and water quality deterioration. According to the United Nations, nearly 1.8 billion people will be living in regions with water scarcity by 2025, and nearly two-thirds of the world’s populations will live in a water-stressed area.
This increase in water demand combined with the limitation of water resources lead to consider alternative technologies to treat, distribute, use, and reuse water. Nanotechnology offers opportunities to develop a safe and sustainable water Supply. I will discuss here current and potential applications of Nanomaterials in water and wastewater treatment; fate of nanomaterials in the environment;  the challenges, and risks faced by water/wastewater treatment nanotechnologies; and research area that MENA region could focus on  in order to become contributors rather than consumers.
